January is regarded as the worst month on the Misery Index. Can you even believe there is a Misery Index! January has a unique combination of cold weather and reduced daylight hours. We tend to retreat inside and and have even less daylight hours. Some people are very sensitive to reduced daylight. There was some evolutionary advantage to having a slow metabolism in the winter. It's better to need less food in slow metabolism with less food around. But in modern times, it's a drag to shut down for the winter. A way to "trick" your body in the winter is to use a therapeutic light box between 6am to 8am. Your body gets stimulated to think the sun is up at 6am and thinks the days are longer, hence feeling like summer. This is how therapeutic light works, to kick your metabolism into summer mood with better energy and mood, and feel less of the Winter Blues!
