Traumatic events that occur during a persons life can cause a person a deep sense of uncertainty and mistrust. Experiencing Trauma destroys the ability to relate to others by poisoning certainties in relationships. There is no trust, there is only danger and betrayal, and triggers are everywhere.  Many people that go through Trauma cannot face the ongoing fear, anxiety, and pain, and turn to drugs and alcohol. Relationships are often broken and dissatisfying. Anxiety, panic, and depression are ongoing symptoms of Trauma. I have come to learn that treating Trauma involves first establishing trust, which may take a while and sometimes never happens.  With trust, people can begin to explain what happened to them. That may be hard when the trauma has occurred at 5 years old. I have found that treating Trauma has caused a change in me as well as a change in my patients.  I have come to have great empathy in treating people with Trauma. Empathy associated with trust becomes a powerful tool in therapy.
